If you’ve been reading along, we’ve spent several weeks talking about purpose and being intentional in life. A lot of things in this life sounds harder than they really are, when taken into context. Our purpose for instance can be summed up in a few words, which some may or may not believe. But for commercial purposes there has been a lot hogtied to the word and its definition that costs well-meaning folk millions of dollars.
For those who believe in God, our purpose is wrapped in Jesus Christ, whom we believe in. When we live with the reality of God, our purpose become crystal clear as we come to know God. But there are many believers who struggle with this reality because we partly still hold onto things we learned as we grow in our faith.
Bible tells us that we are a holy nation and priests unto God because of Jesus Christ. We can see this in 1 Peter 2:9 for those who will want to search it out for themselves. We have a saying among believers, “God doesn’t change”. It is true. God is faithful to everything He has ever done and upholds His word vigorously.
So how does that help us with our purpose? Back in Genesis 1, for those who have read the first book of the Bible; God created man. “Let us create man in our image and in our likeness”, God said. This was the first part of our purpose and we can explore the gospel and discover that we are saved to return to God and His kingdom.
But God didn’t just create man in His image but assigned mankind a purpose that we carry out today, albeit in some perverse ways because of sin. “Let us create man in our image and in our likeness”, God said, and concluding “Let them have dominion over the earth, over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, over the beasts of the field”. And so here we are living on earth. Our domain.
Is that our purpose? When children are born they are born looking like their parents and, in time they begin to act like their parents. It was supposed to be the same with our kind until we, in Adam, rebelled against God’s commands. But God did not want to lose His creation, so He made a plan and sent Jesus, a man whom He walked in, to die the death we deserved. By obeying His Father, Jesus redeemed mankind from the rebellion and restored those who believe to God’s kingdom.
Faith, our purpose; “My righteous one shall live by faith”, says the Lord, “And if he turns back I will have no pleasure in Him”. Just these words found in the Bible expresses our purpose on earth. To Serve God and to become like Jesus and obey God. Ecclesiastes 12:13 says “Fear God and keep His commandments”.
Those whom God reveals Himself to, because when He calls us we seek Him out and spend time learning about Him learn something important. God restored us to our dominion on earth under the rulership of His Son, Yeshuah Messiah (Jesus Christ). It may seem strange because most of us don’t consider dominion to mean being subject to people. But we live in a time when death and disorder run rampant.
The people though who turn to God to find their purpose in life come into knowledge and a life, though with trouble, that is blessed and free. No rules apply to them because they walk in the way God intended us to live.
God establishes us and our purpose as we live and continue in His word so that we can live in the dominion He gave us at the beginning. But we are not kings like the kings we’ve come to know in the movies and story books. While some of us rule over people, we are all tasked with taking care of the planet together. That means taking up tasks that support the planet and one another.
We don’t fully see that happening now, but as we live in faith, we can see it coming to fruition as God works out the prophesies He has spoken over the world. Sure, there is a judgment coming on the whole earth because of what we’re doing and because there are folk who don’t believe God. But there is a time coming when the wickedness we see now will not exist, because God is going to remove it from the earth.
So how do we unlock our purpose? The purpose sellers and get rich folk would tell you about a book they wrote or some great feat you must perform. But those who believe God and live like it have their purpose unlocked for them by God, who created us for the set purpose of living in His kingdom as His people, and children.
If you are a believer looking to unlock your purpose, seek God with your whole heart and have an honest conversation with Him about life. Expect an answer, because He did say he would be found if we seek Him with our whole hearts. It is a faithful truth God told. HE reveals Himself to the one who looks for him as it is written in Matthew 6:33. That is a daily seeking. When we spend time studying the word of God to understand, He gives us the truth and so much more.
While we won’t all get to rule over other people, we do get to rule our lives and our selves and, do great things, if we apply ourselves to what the Lord puts in us. As it is written “I chose you and appointed you to bear fruit”. As it is not many people learn to live this life when the doors of the church close. But if we go searching for God we will find Him and he will lead us in our purpose inside the churches and in the kingdom we are created to live in.
