Take A Break From Life

Taking a break from life is easier said than done, right?

Life throws all sorts of curves at us. We’re having fun and suddenly, problems. Not many of us go out in the morning with the intention of bringing stress home. We just seem to be the only outlet problems have. If that’s not all, responsibilities from family and work need our attention often too.

Let’s face it, life is hectic. We aren’t even going to talk about all the reasons for what we face on our daily. We’ll call it life and move on. Misery can become out companion as we figure things out – and yeah, we have to get to the bottom of things or somebody might get upset and add to our problems.

If this sounds familiar, we all go through it. Rich. Poor. Healthy. Sick. We face the same demons that try to run us ragged every day. That’s the bad part of problems and responsibilities.

The good news is we have some control over how we respond to what life throws at us. All that shade can be taxing on our bodies. But every now and again we can choose to take a small break from life.

In the book of Mark 6:31, Jesus had welcomed the disciples from the mission to go and preach in some Judean towns. The disciples were tired but had many people around them. They were doing what they had been trained to do. Living that new life. Sharing the gospel. But, Jesus listened to their stories and then said, “Come away to a private place to get some rest by yourselves.”

The understanding is that they faced the old world and had been living the life we live today with all its problems. Granted, they didn’t have the technology we did. But there were people and problems. The call to rest was something different, the first time I read the passage.

I learned something from that reading that, when applied our hectic life today, can bring new levels of energy. Rest. Taking time to do nothing but rest and pray allows us to recharge our batteries. This is an option in all of life, whether we’re facing problems or having fun.

The best thing we can do sometimes is just to take a breath and allow ourselves to rest and focus on the important things in life. Our health and the word of God. After all, even the Lord calls us to take a break from life every so often.

I know it is easier said than done, especially when we’re facing some tough choices. But I have learned that fresh eyes see angles that tired eyes would not notice. Also, a refreshed soul is willing to take steps tired souls cannot, while bogged down with hurry and worry.

While you’re out and about today, take a break and allow yourself a minute to just breath and enjoy the sunlight and the breeze. You never know what you might discover new ways of handling something you thought was an impossible situation.
