At New Year’s time, people make resolutions of things they want to get done. Did you happen to get all of last year’s, or did you forget about it? New year’s resolutions can be as fickle as the person who makes it. They are things that can be done, but most people are so busy they get derailed before January is done. But our resolve can get us through our resolutions.
Bad memories can add to our resolution woes. But we do have pencils and paper we can write on and stick up near a mirror we check often. Who doesn’t like to look nice every morning? Bad memory doesn’t have to stymie our resolution.
Be diligent in doing what you have decided to do. One thing I’ve learned over these years is that others may need exactly what you’re doing or going through. Sometimes you won’t even know you’ve helped someone else take a step they needed to take. But sticking to your resolution can have a positive impact on the people you know, or those who know you.
Pray often about those resolutions. You never know. 2 Kings 6:5-6 tells a story that shows how involved God is with people who believe in Him and pray to Him. A man lost an axe head in a body of water, and God helped him find it.
As I recall, we often try to do things on our own. But the people of God should put their hope in Jesus Christ in everything. I slip and try to do things on my own and get frustrated often enough to know this is a fact. When we pray and acknowledge God in the things we’re doing and are patient, things turn out for the better.
The ability to endure produces stamina in tough times and may even empower your resolve to follow through on the resolution you’ve made. The willingness to pray and trust in the Lord elevates our efforts beyond what we can do on our own.
