Coming to Jesus Christ

Coming to Jesus can be as simple as knowing that we can because he is there for us and will not turn us away or turn his back on us. Coming to Jesus can also be difficult if we have questions about how or even if God will give us the time of day. Be sure of this, if your heart is moved to go to Jesus Christ, it is because God has called you to come to His Son for the salvation prepared for you from the beginning. As the Lord said through the prophet Isaiah, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name, you are mine” (is., 43:1).  If the Lord has called you, it is because He wants you to be His in Jesus, and it is a sure promise.

Maybe you were in a church the first time you felt your legs itching to get up during the pastoral appeal. In your heart you want to grow closer to Jesus and but don’t know what to do, and the appeal got your feet to stir. Even if you are conflicted, look at the word of Isaiah 43 and you can see the wonder of God. You only need to believe Him, that He called you and redeemed you. Stand in the appeal and let the Holy Spirit convict you and lead you to the altar, where your life in Christ will begin a new phase because of your desire and openness to the Lord.

Some people may say there is a right way and a wrong way to go about this. Jesus only says “come unto me all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”. I write this because there are some people who openly question whether they can come to the Lord because they believe they’ve done a lot wrong in life. Whatever your circumstance, even if it is lack of a church building Jesus welcomes you to come to him in prayer. The answer to that is simple; just ask the Lord with your own lips to allow you to come to him and you will realize the truth when things in your life moves to open the way for you As the Lord promises “you may ask me anything in my name and I will do it” (John 14:14).

What scares most of us is the question of confession and repentance. The words “if God only knew what I’ve done” can be heard in many languages today. But every single thing you and I have done in life is done in full view of the Lord, according to the word of Proverbs chapter 5 verse 21. The truth isn’t pretty for some of us, but, when you understand the grace of God, you know the beauty of the truth and why Jesus said, “the truth shall set you free” (Jn 8:32). So be comfortable in prayer confessing your sins to Jesus and so be able to repent of your sins. Jesus wants to take your sin and shame away so that you can boldly go before God confidently as testified to in 1st John 3 verse 21.

Coming to Jesus is as personal as eating a meal. Although we who choose to share the gospel with you in churches, on the streets, in your homes, on TV or the internet can make an appeal for you to come to Christ, the decision to accept the work of the Spirit within you, is solely yours. That does not mean that a brother or sister can’t stand up with you or even walk with you to the water at baptism, if you want company, but God weighs the heart and that is where the decision should be made, as explained in Hebrews chapter 4 verse 12.

No one should force, coerce, or shame you into accepting God, though we do speak with varying forms of seasoning in our appeal, not everyone is able to agree with. God desires willing hearts that seek His Salvation given to us in Jesus (Isaiah 55:1). Therefore, as God desires, so we who choose to share the gospel present the word of God to anyone willing to listen, and the Holy Spirit works within us, both the presenter and the listener/reader (Matthew 28:19); leaving the act of coming to Jesus Christ up to those whose convictions lead them to say yes to Christ.
