Redeeming Love

The Bible shows us many ways that God loves and encourages us; from the breath that we take to the moments we feel less than our best. It is, however, the moments where God has no reason to love that we see the depths of His Love for us. Those may be the times we believe we’ve made wrong choices and don’t have a footing. In those moments the grace of God seem to shine even brighter to keep us encouraged for our walk on the narrow path with Jesus Christ.

The book of Zechariah gives us a glimpse of the amazing Love of God in chapter 7 verses 9 – 10 “This is what the Lord Almighty says: Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. In your hearts do not think evil of each other.” It was the beginning of a promise to restore from seventy years of captivity. And then John chapter 3 verse 16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

God’s first response to those who came to Zechariah to inquire of Him is to tell them what He had been telling them to do all along. His response though showed a lack of concern for Himself, and instead, showed concern for what the people were doing to one another before the captivity while He was still warning them. In the book of Isaiah, God lamented over and over that if Israel would turn from sin the Lord would forgive their sins and heal them. They didn’t, but now the remnant wanted to celebrate the seventh and tenth months, if God would allow them. God’s response was to first, reiterate what He had told them before and then to promise restoration on top of it.

So what does redeeming love look like? A good example is Zechariah chapter 7, or you can turn to the book of John chapter 3 where we see God’s promised salvation, in the man Jesus Christ, teaching a man named Nicodemus about the reason the Son of God had come into the world.
